Space Storms
The Space Science Institute has been
funded to develop the Education and Outreach portion of the National
Space Weather Program. Initially, SSI
will develop an educational unit of three weeks duration for high school science
classes based upon Solarscapes (a middle school
project) and a pilot project created by Ramon
Lopez of the University of Maryland called
A Storm in Space.
Students will access scientific data and other information over the World
Wide Web. The unit will be designed to minimize the time students need to use
a computer, so that it can be taught even when there is very limited
access to computers. The objectives for the unit are:
- Content knowledge around the space environment and
space weather
- Multipoint, correlative data analysis
- Using the Internet and the World Wide Web to access data and applications
to solve real science problems
All materials are freely available to teachers or to anyone else who wants to
explore
space weather.
