SSI Education and Outreach Vision

The Space Science Institute is a model for what a twenty-first century scientific research institution should be -- one that is firmly committed to integration as well as inspiration. We strongly believe that the scientific research enterprise must not be practiced in isolation from the public that supports it. SSI is currently unique among scientific research institutions in America for two primary reasons:

Education Vision

The Space Science Institute provides national leadership in developing innovative ways to translate the activities and resources of earth and space science research into exciting and effective K-16 education and public outreach programs.

Education Mission

In support of our nation's need for science literate citizens and a capable and diverse technical work force, the Space Science Institute facilitates partnerships between the professional communities in scientific research, science education and business to develop programs that realize the unique educational potential of the people, facilities and data assets of the earth and space science communities.

Guiding Principles

We serve as a hub for creative win-win partnerships among the science, education and business communities at all levels -- locally, regionally and nationally. These strategic partnerships and alliances enable us to implement a higher quality and greater diversity of projects than any single organization could otherwise do. These connections make us especially well poised to take full educational advantage of exciting scientific discoveries and special events in the research realm. Such events are catalysts for learning science content and process. They also help to cultivate a greater appreciation of science amongst the general public. Successful public outreach programs play an important role in delivering scientific information.
