The Space Science Institute (SSI) manages and directs spaceflight mission Education
and Public Outreach (EPO) programs. If you are looking for an organization to
provide overall direction to your proposed EPO program, or to develop various
elements of your program, then look at the unique capabilities and strengths of
SSI.
EPO is important because all flight projects are now required by NASA's Office
of Space Science to budget 1-2% toward developing quality EPO programs that
are well leveraged, balanced and effective.
Why should SSI be involved in your proposed EPO program?
- SSI has experience in developing winning EPO programs
- SSI is a leader in engaging scientists as partners in EPO programs
- SSI develops innovative EPO programs
- SSI has a knowledgeable and responsive staff
- SSI has developed a powerful network of partner organizations

SSI
develops products and services that cover a broad range from formal education
to informal education. In addition, it partners with experienced organizations
that develop exemplary public outreach programs. A schematic of the EPO landscape
is shown to the left. Notice that we view informal education to lie within the
intersection of formal education and public outreach. SSI can build broad, cohesive
EPO programs that cover the range of formal, informal, and public outreach products
(for more on these categories and why each is important, see the Explanatory
Guide to the NASA Office of Space Science Education & Public Outreach Evaluation
Criteria, FAQ
10).
