The Space Science Institute is a nationally recognized center of excellence for
the integration of scientific research, education and public outreach programs
in the space and earth sciences. The Space Science Institute (SSI) develops high
quality exhibitions that inspire as well as inform. With visitors to science centers
and museums growing in number, developing programs that link formal (classroom-centered)
and informal (museum-centered) education is vital to our country's science literacy.
The Institute produces:
- Scientifically accurate science exhibits
- Comprehensive education programs designed to accompany exhibits
- Workshops for museum staff and educators on space and earth science
- Standards-based space and earth science curriculum materials
SSI's exhibits bring science to life. They immerse the visitor in a world of
hands-on and minds-on activities that instruct and entertain at the same time.
How does SSI do this? The Institute manages project teams that can plan, design,
evaluate, and fabricate both large and small exhibits. SSI always enlists the
creative talents of scientists and engineers who are at the cutting edge of
the science that is the focus of the exhibit.

MarsQuest exhibition. |

SSI's exhibitions incorporate hands-on, age-appropriate components suitable
for all age groups and learning styles. It also develops quality materials that
extend the exhibit experience into the classroom. These materials are standards-based
and aligned with the exhibit so that teachers can do the activities in their
classroom either before or after a field-trip.
Information on Our Exhibits:
- Electric
Space: SSI's Electric Space Exhibits explore the wonders of our plasma
universe. Visitors learn about the beauty and awesome power of the Sun-Earth
connection and the cause of the most spectacular light show on Earth - the
polar aurora. Learn how your museum can prepare for the upcoming solarmax.
- MarsQuest:
This 5000 square foot planetary science exbibition is now under development.
Visitors learn about the nature of exploration, the "life on Mars" story,
and gain a deeper understanding of Earth through a variety of Earth-Mars comparisons.
MarsQuest will enable millions of Americans to share in the exciting new era
of Mars exploration.
- Space Weather Center:
This is SSI's newest exhibit. It is being developed for the National Space
Weather Program. This 200 square foot traveling exhibit will captivate visitors.
They learn about solar storms that cause many problems in space as well as
on the ground. Visitors also learn about the beauty of the Northern Lights.
- Destination: Mars: At 600 square feet,
the Destination: Mars exhibit can bring the excitement of Mars exploration
to smaller venues, such as visitor centers. Destination: Mars uses a playful
design to spark imaginations and lots of hands-on activities to engage adults
and children. Families will enjoy the time they spend together, traveling
to Mars.
