Paul B. Dusenbery

Dr. Dusenbery received his B.A. in Physics from Whitman College in 1972 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics in 1975 and 1978, respectively, from the University of New Hampshire specializing in physics. He was awarded an Advanced Study Program postdoctoral fellowship from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in 1978. He continued to do research at NCAR until 1980, when he was awarded a NRC Resident Research Associate fellowship at the Space Environment Center (NOAA). In 1982, Dr. Dusenbery became a Research Associate in the Astrophysical, Planetary and Atmospheric Sciences (APAS) Department at the University of Colorado and in 1990 was promoted to a Senior Research Associate position in the APAS Department. In September of 1989, Dr. Dusenbery became the Program Director of the Magnetospheric Physics Program at the National Science Foundation. He remained in that position until June of 1991, when he returned to the University of Colorado. In October 1992, Dr. Dusenbery was appointed Executive Director of the Space Science Institute which is a nonprofit research and education institute located in Boulder, Colorado.

Dr. Dusenbery has been active in a variety of areas in solar-terrestrial physics, including minor ion acceleration in the solar wind, ion conic generation in the auroral region, generation of auroral kilometric radiation, broadband turbulence in boundary layers, and nonlinear dynamics of charged particles in current sheets. Dr. Dusenbery also has familiarity with analyzing data from sounding rockets and satellites and has a solid background in kinetic theory and wave-particle interactions. He has been principal investigator and co-principal investigator on a number of grants from such agencies as NSF, NASA and the Air Force. He also has served on a number of committees which focus on both research and educational themes. The director of SSI has formal relationships with the National Science Resources Center in Washington, DC, the Boulder Valley Public School system in Colorado, the Science Discovery Program at CU, the Association of Science-Technology Centers in Washington, DC, and the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, PA. He was a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Education and Human Resource Committee, chair of the Space Physics and Aeronomy (SPA/AGU) Public Information Committee, member of SPA's Education Committee, and a member of the Boulder Valley Connect Project Advisory Committee, which is part of Colorado's State Systemic Initiative grant funded by NSF.
